IISc Bengaluru and Samsung Semiconductor India Research are collaborating to strengthen quantum research through a dedicated lab. The research will explore quantum devices, electronics that operate at extremely low temperatures, and the integration of advanced semiconductor materials with quantum systems.
How do scientists build the technologies needed for quantum computing and communication? It requires more than understanding quantum physics. Researchers also need specialised equipment, advanced materials and electronics capable of operating under demanding conditions. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, is collaborating with Samsung Semiconductor India Research (SSIR) to establish a Quantum Research Lab with corporate social responsibility (CSR) support initiated in 2023. The lab's research spans several areas, including qubit characterisation, which involves measuring the properties of the basic units of quantum computing; cryogenic electronics that operate at extremely low temperatures; quantum-device reliability; and technologies for generating and detecting individual particles of light, called photons. Researchers are also exploring how advanced semiconductor materials can be integrated with quantum systems. The initiative has supported research on quantum devices made from two-dimensional materials and emerging device concepts under cryogenic conditions within IISc's Department of Electronic Systems Engineering. The collaboration aims to strengthen India's quantum research capabilities while developing expertise relevant to the semiconductor workforce. It aligns with the broader ambitions of India's National Quantum Mission, although the establishment of the lab does not itself mean that commercially deployable quantum technologies have been achieved.
