Bengaluru-based startup QOSMIC has developed an indigenous Fast Steering Mirror, a precision component that helps keep laser beams aligned for optical communication. The company reports that the mirror passed thermal-vacuum and vibration qualification tests on its first attempt, bringing India a step closer to domestic capability in this specialised space technology.

How can satellites exchange information using laser beams without losing alignment as they move? One important component is a Fast Steering Mirror, which makes tiny, rapid adjustments to keep a laser beam pointed at its receiver. This precision is essential for optical communication between satellites and ground stations. Bengaluru-based space technology startup QOSMIC has developed its own Fast Steering Mirror. According to the company’s announcement, the component passed thermal-vacuum and vibration qualification tests on the first attempt, around nine months after development began. These tests assess whether hardware can withstand extreme temperature and vacuum conditions and the vibrations associated with launch. The development matters because only a small number of companies worldwide manufacture this class of space-grade component, making domestic production strategically valuable for India’s optical and quantum communication ambitions. QOSMIC says the mirror has reached Technology Readiness Level 7. However, it is still awaiting its first flight in space, so the milestone represents qualification progress rather than demonstrated in-orbit performance. The company received support from ARTPARK, which backs deep-tech ventures developing critical technologies.
