What Hysterectomy Reveals About Labour, Care, and Health Systems
An Insight Thursday session exploring how labour precarity, debt and access to healthcare shape reproductive health decisions, drawing on research among women agricultural labourers in rural Maharashtra.
About this event
The Institute of Public Health Bengaluru and the T. T. Narasimhan School of Advanced Studies at IPH Bengaluru present an external speaker session as part of the Insight Thursdays series. Dr. Neymat Chadha will discuss findings from her ethnographic study of early-age hysterectomies among women agricultural labourers in rural Maharashtra. The session examines how reproductive health interventions are shaped by the everyday conditions of sustaining labour, managing debt and securing a liveable present. Rather than viewing hysterectomy solely through the lens of over-medicalisation or health-system failure, the discussion situates it within the wider contexts of women's work, livelihoods and access to care.
