Universe: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

A lecture exploring how our understanding of the universe has evolved through observations and mathematical modelling, from early cosmological models to modern theories of gravity, dark matter, dark energy and the universe’s evolution. Prof. Parameswaran Ajith will discuss the evolution of our understanding of the universe and current cosmological theories.

About this event

Our understanding of the universe has changed over centuries, from early models placing Earth at the centre of the cosmos to the recognition that the Sun is one of many stars in the Milky Way and that galaxies exist beyond it. The lecture traces key developments in cosmology, including Einstein’s theory of gravity, observations of distant galaxies and evidence that the universe is expanding. It will also explore how observations have led scientists to infer the existence of dark matter and dark energy, whose nature remains uncertain. The talk examines how cosmology has evolved into a science grounded in observations and testable theories, and considers our current understanding of the evolution of the universe.
