The Hidden Ocean: How Antarctica Shapes Our Planet
Explore how ocean circulation around Antarctica influences ice melting, ocean currents and the global climate system. IISc researcher Bishakhdatta Gayen explains how Antarctic meltwater affects the transport of heat, carbon and deep-ocean circulation.
About this event
This lecture explores the hidden circulation of the deep ocean and the importance of Antarctic waters to the global ocean system. It examines how warm ocean currents and eddies interact with Antarctic ice shelves and sea ice, driving melting from below and releasing cold, fresh meltwater into the ocean. The lecture then considers how this meltwater changes ocean properties, currents and the exchange between Antarctica and the open ocean. It also explores how changes in the Antarctic region can influence the global transport of heat and carbon, as well as the deep overturning circulation that connects the world's oceans.
